The gallery's presentation for SPRING 1883 will feature an installation by Madeline Kidd with paintings and sculptures throughout the bathroom. Kidd's practice deals with real and pseudo-domestic settings; in her work commonplace and familiar icons of interior decoration, such as floral arrangements, fruit plates, paintings and abstract sculptures, are appropriated, recreated and conceptualised as a fantasy set. A selection of new works by other gallery artists will be displayed throughout the bedroom.

SPRING 1883 is an exciting new art fair that draws on the traditions of the Gramercy Park Fair, New York and presents the best of contemporary art practice from Australia, New Zealand and beyond.

Through its intervention into a hotel’s context, SPRING 1883 sees the traditional art fair model discarded and replaced with a boutique site for dialogue and interaction between galleries, artists and collectors.

Conceived by galleries for galleries, participation in SPRING 1883 is through personal invitation only, thus allowing the project to evolve out of shared conceptual engagements.

The inaugural SPRING 1883 took place at the Hotel Windsor, Melbourne’s oldest and most cherished grand hotel in 2014, and its second installment will see SPRING 1883 take over the entire Establishment Hotel in Sydney, a boutique hotel in the heart of Sydney’s CBD.
